In times of misfortune, superstition and religion in general make a flourishing comeback. The author is looking for the specific background of the Congolese (ex-Zaire) population confirming this ancient truth, but with a hidden agenda : his general purpose is to see how the average Congolese views sickness in general and in particular. This background might be useful for the future, to fit classical medicine into the picture. Instead of selling or imposing the paradigms of classical medicine to the patient, it would be preferable, according to the author, to fit classical medicine into the clinical picture of the African. Furthermore, it would allow to determine the exact place of classical medicine as well as that of alternative medicine and prayer groups. This is daring research, in the sense that most doctors will find this a negligible aspect of medicine so that the author can expect very little appreciation from the scientific world. However, this research is very valuable : even if we admit that from a scientific point of view, only the classical medicine can be defended, its approach and application starting from the paradigms of the patient and population is very useful.
