Agriculture and forestry are the main sectors of the Indonesian economy. The decrease in soil fertility is accelerated by heavy rains, soil degradation and agricultural intensification and expansion due to demographic growth. The densely populated and intensively cultivated island of Java has volcanic soils with a low fertility because of a limited supply of nutrients and a high phosphor fixation.
This study provides detailed information on the volcanic soils of Java, with special regard to the development of programs for the enhancement of productivity, the conservation and the sustainable use of soils. A rational soil management by policy makers should be based on this knowledge.
